Q
Can I use car oil in my lawnmower or small engine?
No. Cars have an oil filter and run at different temperatures and speeds to a small engine. Most mowers and small engines run on SAE 30 oil.

Q
My mower cuts lawn but does not fill up the catcher.
This is a sign that the blades are worn. As blades wear, they first lose their lifting ability, and will be unable to throw cuttings into the catcher even if they still cut well.

Q
My mower starts, but cuts out, or only runs for a short time.
Mowers that struggle to keep running are likely suffering from a fuel problem; either a blockage or fuel that is stale or contaminated with water or another substance. Fuel problems typically require cleaning of the fuel system and service of the carburetor.

Q
My chainsaw cuts on an angle and steers to one side as I cut. Do I nee a new chain?
Often, no. The sharpening angle on the chain may be incorrect. Sharpening and resetting the chain to a correct angle may fix this. This can be done with a File & Guide kit, or an in-store sharpening service. You can also purchase a new chain.

Sometimes, the chain bar groove may be worn, allowing the chain to move at an angle.

Q
My trimmer or whipper snipper often breaks it's nylon cutting line. Are there different qualities?
Yes. Many different nylon lines are available. Talk to a mower specialist about your needs to get the best results.

Q
How often should a mower be serviced?
Every 12 months. The best time is just before spring, before the mower does it’s hardest work.

Q
My mower does not have an oil draining plug. Can I still change the oil?
Yes. Some mowers do not have oil drain plugs – instead, oil is remove through the dipstick opening. Fuel siphoning kits for oil changes are available for $25.00.

Q
My chainsaw starts, but has no power and will not reach full speed.
This is usually caused by a blocked exhaust system. As they burn fuel, 2-stroke engines will leave carbon deposits in the exhaust that can build up and restrict airflow. Cleaning this (‘decarbonation’ of the exhaust) typically fixes the problem.

Q
Can my fuel expire?
Yes. Fuel can expire as quickly as 1-3 months. Expired fuel will clog up the fuel system, requiring the mower to be cleaned out and fresh fuel provided.

Q
What fuel is best for small engines or outdoor power equipment?
The best fuel to use is simple unleaded 91.

Q
My mower leaks oil near the spark plugs. Is this a major problem?
No. This type of leak is often caused by tipping the mower up incorrectly, causing oil to leak through the crankcase breather tube. A clean of the fuel system and carburetor is required to fix this.

Q
Can I use oil for my chainsaw's chain and bar lubrication?
Specific chain-and-bar oil is strongly recommended, because it contains a special resin that holds it to the chain when in use.

Most oilers pump the oil at the top of the cutting bar, but most of the cutting occurs on the underside of the bar. Oil without resin can fly off the chain before it reaches the cutting area. Dry cutting areas will make the chain run hotter, stretch quicker, and will dull the chain over time.
